We’re doing everything we can to keep our guests and students safe to make it possible for future beauty professionals to get the education they’ve dreamed of! We’re excited to help students pursue their passion in beauty, whether they want to learn hairstyling, makeup, and nail care as a cosmetologist or skincare as an esthetician.
If you’re starting classes soon or are on the fence of when you want to start, it’s still a good time to prepare for your first day. To set yourself up for success, get ready to go back to beauty school with these seven tips!
1. Learn the New Sanitation and Safety Guidelines
We’re dedicated to keeping everyone safe, which means we’ve added additional safety and sanitation measures to each appointment. Become familiar with them, as they are an integral part to the learning process, both as a student and a future beauty professional.
Be prepared for these policies to change based on updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
2. Set Your Sleep Schedule
Start following a consistent sleep schedule before classes start. Try going to sleep earlier than normal and getting up earlier on a regular basis. Or, you can try to unwind before the day ends by avoiding caffeine or putting down your phone before heading to bed.
At American Barber and Beauty Academy, we ask and encourage students to always be learning, asking questions, and practicing whenever possible. Because there’s so much to know, you should be awake and alert. Setting your sleep schedule up before classes start can go a long way to help you get the most out of your education!
3. Become Familiar With Your Student Kit
Your student kit includes professional equipment you can use even after becoming a licensed cosmetologist, barber, or esthetician. While the contents of each kit may vary, you can expect a variety of tools including sheers, brushes, heat styling tools, clips, and more. Get to know what each one is used for to make it easier to pull the right tool when practicing your styles or providing services to guests.
4. Invest in the Right Wardrobe
While getting an education in beauty school, it’s important to dress the part. At American Barber and Beauty Academy, we require our students to wear a black or gray outfit with black shoes. Barbers are required to wear their smock, which is provided as part of their student kit.
When looking for shoes, make sure to find some that are close-toed, non-slip, and comfortable. You can expect to be on your feet for some if not most of the day providing services* to guests, practicing your skills, and more!
5. Pack Your Backpack
Get ready to be learning all day! There’s a lot to learn, and we’ve packed the schedule full. Of course, that doesn’t mean there won’t be the occasional break or time to refresh, and a good backpack with the necessities can make it easier to focus on learning. We have lockers on site that you can keep your things safe when you’re not busy learning, just make sure to bring your own lock!
It may also be good to have on hand:
- Hand sanitizer
- A small notebook and pens or pencils
- Small snacks
- Lip balm or chapstick
- Extra hair ties or bobby pins
- A phone charger
- Water bottle
A water bottle is especially important to keep yourself hydrated all day. If you can, find one that doesn’t leak and is big enough that you won’t have to refill often.
6. Don’t Be Afraid To Ask Questions
We expect our students to be here to learn. Think hard about what you want to get out of your beauty school education and come up with questions you can ask, whether it’s about creating a certain look or how to provide amazing services to your guests. Prepare yourself to ask a lot of questions and engage with what you’re learning.
Everyone learns differently, and you should find a way to apply what you’ve learned in a way that works best for you!
7. Network With Other Future Beauty Professionals
Even with the changes in safety and sanitation procedures, it’s still possible to make important relationships with other future beauty professionals in school. Don’t be afraid to get to know your beauty school classmates, learn why they decided to enroll, and keep in touch after your time at school. You never know how the people you meet will impact your future career.
